His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in a family of pure Gaudiya Vaisnavas in 1896 in Calcutta on the auspicious day of Nandutsav. From early childhood, he showed signs of pure devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. At the tender age of five, he single-handedly organized a neighborhood Ratha-yatra festival. In their first meeting in 1922, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura requested Srila Prabhupada to broadcast Vedic knowledge in English. He followed the instructions of His spiritual master and tried his best to serve Him. He took sannyasa in 1959 and eventually went to the West and established ISKCON (The International Society for Krishna Consciousness) in July, 1966. Before he passed away on November 14, 1977, he had guided the Society and seen it grow to a worldwide confederation of more than 108 temples, many asramas, schools, temples, institutes and farm communities. His motto was, "Preaching is the essence, purity is the force, books are the basis and utility is the principal".
